this morning, i posted beautiful Jason Isbell lyrics to social, celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary. i even admitted i loved Said Boy more than bacon. what about an anniversary that happens on a national holiday when your child has school and you are off? isn't every 24th wedding anniversary this special?
i planned for this day for weeks. take Her to school, post some sweet something to social (using a picture of me and Said Boy living our best lives, filtered, of course), clean up, head to Thomasville for some roaming around and maybe a purchase or two, return home and wait for Said Boy to get home then be whisked away to some fancy restaurant for a steak and adult conversation. And maybe a present ~ after all, it's considered the musical anniversary and opals can be beautiful in the right setting.
today was more Super 8 than If We Were Vampires. {My fellow Jason Isbell fans will understand the reference.}
below is an actual account of what living our best lives after 24 years of marriage rEaLLy looked like:
Get up at 6:45am to get Her ready for school. On my day off.
Realize Her rash that started last night has spread and could be serious
Debate what to do with Said Boy
Tell Said Boy happy anniversary. It's clear he forgot
Consult my personal doctor (Dr. WebMD) to determine what rash could be
See scarlet fever as a possibility
Text nurse friend to ask what to do
Nurse friend asks if She's running fever
Admit to nurse friend that you don't have a working thermometer
Nurse friend makes appointment for strep test
She practices the piano while we wait {it is the musical anniversary, after all}
Take Her to doctor's office for strep test
Realize it's been nearly a year since we were at the doctor's office
Realize my day has been hijacked
Hear new nurse say the rash looks like classic strep throat
Strep test negative
Decide to get flu shots while there {when in Rome ...}
She hides like a cat in a veterinary office, refusing said flu shot
Tell her to buck up and get mine first to demonstrate bravery
She cowers in corner where new nurse can't get to Her
New nurse tells Her she has other kids to see
Manage to finally get Her shot done and leave doctor's office
Debate going to school and decide against it since the origin of rash is unclear
Drive thru ChikFila for sustenance
Head to Walgreens to get thermometer and my "don't kill my family" prescription
Wait at Walgreens even though script was sent in 24 hours prior
Arrive back home to find half of our ductwork and one of our HVAC units on the front lawn
Hole up in the {rapidly} warming hot (read: no A/C)
Cat nap
Start some laundry
Check her for fever
Left arm throbbing from flu shot
Cat nap
Listen to something happening under house
Hope they remembered to disconnect gas before firing up the blow torch
Load and run dishwasher
Play Mancala
She quits after a questionable play, accusing me of accusing Her of cheating
Realize what my dad went through playing Monopoly with me all those years ago
Ask Her if She'd like to go out and roam around at HomeGoods. She says no
Check Her for fever
Read latest Vanity Fair featuring Idris Elba. Wait. Make that re-read. He is easy on the eyes.
Cat nap.
Said Boy arrives home to an announcement that our main water pipe is leaking
It's not just leaking. It is cracked
Said Boy turns off water main
Said Boy leaves house to get haircut
Putter around in Her room wondering where all the STUFF came from
Realize how difficult showering and getting ready for 8:00 a.m. meeting will be
Realize how difficult preparing dinner will be
Realize we are going out and i've not showered all day
After eleventy hundred days, the rain comes. and stays
Offered steak but settle on sushi
Fun dinner sitting outside with rain falling realizing there is nowhere I'd rather be.
I can only hope the next ~8,760 days are as good as today ...
"sometimes, all i need is the air that i breathe and to love you."
photo cred: Selfie.
Sushi at Masa. No makeup. No filter.
